One of the things I like about Jon Leger is his independent mind. There is a pile of “SEO superstition” around and it is hard sometimes to know who to believe. Ever since Blogger invented “no follow” on comments-to prevent junk or spam comments, there has been much confusion about the value of posting.
On the one hand there is value in a comment just for the traffic. A no follow tag will stop PageRank from being passed but a link is still a link and you will get a visitor. It is the visitor who may join your mailing list.
And the “money is in the list” is not just a truism and the title of my first Marketing ebook but it is true as well!
It is interesting in Jon Leger’s latest post to see how optimistic he was about the value of comment posts. The results are that comments in blogs without “no follow” work to promote your site but that putting a keyword in the name field of the blog is viewed with suspicion by many bloggers.
A simple experiment that other people were not doing and now we have some clarity.
